TOPS Team Members Qualify for National Testing

Four members of the Action
Gymnastics TOPS Program qualified to the TOPS National Testing to be
held October 3-5, 2008 at the National Team Training Center in New
Waverly, Texas. These gymnasts are: Jenna Pinheiro (9), Monica
Servidio (9), Chelsea Tse (11), and Kirsten Tse (11). At the TOPS
National Testing, these gymnasts will test physical abilities and
skills that are specific to their age in attempt to make the TOPS
National Team.
TOPS Season Successful for Action Gymnasts

Action Gymnastics' TOPS (Talent
Opportunity Program) finished out their regional testing last
weekend.
TOPS Regional testing, which consists of physical
abilities, took place throughout the summer and approximately 3,000
gymnasts nationwide participated.
Gymnasts who are ages 9-11 test in attempt to qualify to the TOPS
National Testing, held in October at the National Team Training
Center, where they will test physical abilities and skills for their
age in attempt to make the TOPS National Team.
From those who participated, 310 gymnasts from around
the country will be invited to TOPs National Testing.
Gymnasts who are 7-8 years old
compete in the physical abilities only, but are eligible to directly
qualify to the TOPS National Team (Diamond Level). Results will be
available in August.
Gymnasts of Action Gymnastics who
participated in the TOPS program include: Melissa Astarita (8),
Jenna Pinheiro (9), Monica Servidio (9), Chelsea Tse (11), Kirsten
Tse (11), and Tara Zeni (8). The girls are coached by Eric Duquette
and Ryan Goen.

Gymnasts Shine at NJ State Meet

The level 5 team of
Jenna Pinheiro, Selene Tiko, Monica Servidio, and Madison
Hughes competed in their state meet this past weekend in Sewell, NJ,
earning two first place finishes in the all around, two fifth place
finishes in the all around, and also won numerous event titles. The
team also placed fourth of thirty-six teams with only four girls and
was also the only team to have two all around state champions.
Jenna Pinheiro
placed first in the all around (37.450) and on the balance beam
(9.550) and also placed second on the uneven bars (9.250), third on
floor (9.250), and fifth on vault (9.400) in the 8/JR age
division.
Selene Tiko placed
fifth in the all around (37.425) and also placed second on the
balance beam (9.650), fourth on the uneven bars (9.350), and sixth
on the floor exercise (9.325) in the 10/JR age division.
Monica Servidio
placed first in the all around (38.650), setting a new state record
for the nine year old age group. Servidio also
placed first on the vault (9.700), uneven bars (9.775) balance beam
(9.675) and also placed third on the floor exercise (9.500).
Madison Hughes
placed fifth in the all around
(37.250), and also placed second
on the uneven bars (9.550) and third on the balance beam (9.625).

Level 8 State Meet

Kirsten Tse, Alexis
Mandato, and Holly Gaither competed at the 2008 Level 8 State
Championships in Wayne, NJ. All three gymnasts qualified to the
regional championships as members of the NJ State Team in their
respective age divisions. Mandato and Gaither also took top honors
in the floor exercise, placing 1st and 2nd, respectively (see
photo).
Kirsten Tse competed in the Junior
A age division, placing fourth all around with a 37.650. Kirsten
also placed third on beam (9.500), and seventh on the uneven bars
(9.525) and vault (9.350). Due to a miscalculation in her special
requirements, Kirsten's floor exercise only started from a 9.500, yet she
still managed a 9.275 with an otherwise near flawless routine.
Alexis Mandato competed in the SR
C age division, placing 2nd in the all around with a 34.775. Alexis
also won the floor exercise with a season high score of 9.450, which
also set a new state record. Despite a fall and a 9.500 start value,
Alexis still managed an 8.350 and third place. Alexis concluded her
day with a fourth place on the uneven bars
(8.550) and a seventh place on vault (8.425).
Holly Gaither also competed in the
SR C age division, placing fifth with a 33.650. Holly also placed
second on the floor exercise (9.100), fifth on the balance beam
(8.150), seventh on the uneven bars (8.300), and eighth on vault
(8.100). As mentioned earlier, Holly also qualified to the Regional
Championships a member of the State Team to represent New Jersey.
